Heat protection in summer
Keep rooms cool – without air conditioning.

The most effective heat protection is fitted on the outside of the window.

As soon as sunlight enters through the window, it is converted into heat inside the room – and that heat remains trapped. External sun protection blocks the sun before it reaches the glass, thereby keeping rooms significantly cooler than any curtains or roller blinds inside. Whether it’s external venetian blinds, façade awnings or roller blinds: Griesser keeps the heat out without completely darkening the rooms. Swiss quality since 1882.

Where the heat comes in.

These are the four places where rooms heat up the most in summer – shading from the outside helps in all of them.

Large south-facing windows

Floor-to-ceiling windows and glass fronts let in a lot of solar energy in summer. Without external shading, the heat builds up in the room.

East- and west-facing windows

In the morning and evening, the sun is low in the sky and shines deep into the room. Rooms facing east and west heat up significantly without external shading.

Patio & Conservatory

Glazed outdoor spaces can become extremely hot. Shading above and in front of the glass keeps them usable.

Working from home & glare

The low sun causes glare on the screen and heats the room up. What’s needed is protection that softens the light rather than blocking it out.

5 ways to cope with the summer heat.

This keeps the room cool. The most effective measure is external sun protection: it blocks the sun’s rays before they pass through the glass and reduces heat gain many times over compared with internal solutions. In technical terms, this is described by the g-value – the lower the value, the less solar energy reaches the room.

With these five measures, you can keep your rooms pleasantly cool even on hot days.

Answers to your questions

All about heat protection

What is the best heat protection for windows?

External sun protection such as external blinds, façade awnings or shutters. It blocks the sun’s heat before it reaches the window pane and keeps rooms significantly cooler than internal curtains or roller blinds.

Why is external sun protection better than internal sun protection?

Because it blocks the sun’s rays before they pass through the glass into the room. Internal protection comes too late – by then the heat is already inside the room and is almost impossible to keep out.

Which type of sun protection keeps the room cool whilst still letting in plenty of light?

The external venetian blind. Its adjustable slats direct daylight across the ceiling and deep into the room, whilst keeping out the heat from direct sunlight. This keeps the room pleasantly cool and naturally bright.

Does sun protection help to save energy?

Yes. Less heat gain in summer reduces the need for cooling. In winter, closed sun blinds also reduce heat loss through the windows at night.

External blinds or roller shutters to keep out the heat?

As external systems, both are effective at keeping out the heat. The external venetian blinds allow in more daylight and offer a better view, whilst the roller shutters provide complete blackout.
