PowerSlide: When facades do more than protect

Together with the OST – Eastern Switzerland University of Applied Sciences, Griesser is developing “PowerSlide”, a sliding shutter with integrated PV modules. The research project combines effective solar shading with power generation – showing how energy efficiency can be enhanced directly at the building envelope.

Energy efficiency starts earlier than expected
The energy performance of a building is not determined by building systems alone. Key decisions are made at the design stage – in the building envelope and in the way sunlight, daylight and heat are managed.

External, movable solar shading plays a key role: it reduces overheating in summer, makes targeted use of solar gains in winter and improves thermal comfort in operation. With rising temperatures, robust facade solutions are becoming a decisive factor for future-ready buildings.

One element, two functions
“PowerSlide” takes this approach further. The motorised sliding shutter not only provides shading but also generates electricity. Facade surfaces become active energy surfaces.

Vertical photovoltaics reveal their full potential here: they deliver relevant yields even in months with less sunshine and complement rooftop systems effectively. The result is a system that combines solar shading, energy generation and architectural integration in one element – without requiring additional space.

Key benefits at a glance

  • reduces summer heat gains and improves thermal comfort
  • makes targeted use of solar gains in winter
  • generates additional solar power directly on the facade
  • activates facade areas that were previously unused for energy
  • combines research, industrial expertise and architectural integration

Innovation with a focus on real-world application
To succeed in practice, such a solution must go beyond laboratory performance. Durability, low maintenance, ease of installation and a high level of prefabrication are essential.

At the same time, combining mobility with integrated photovoltaics places high demands on design and execution. The collaboration between Griesser and OST brings these perspectives together from the outset – with a clear goal: a market-ready solution.

A tangible commitment to the facade of the future
For Griesser, “PowerSlide” is more than a development project. It contributes to a planning culture in which sustainability starts in the design phase.
When building envelopes fulfil multiple functions – protection, comfort and energy generation – the role of the facade fundamentally changes. Solar shading becomes an active element of climate-responsive architecture.
